Travel Like A Wellness Lover
For most people, traveling is a moment of relaxation and fun but for some of us it can be a stressful time to plan for your comfort out of your home. I just flew out of Australia to spend Christmas with my family in Europe, and as much as I love flying and watch movies on board, I also dread the muscle soreness and stiff joints you get from stacking yourself in one square meters. If you add to that the dehydration and the 24 hours without sleep, the start of your holiday can feel pretty rough! Europe or Bali, there is no flight short enough to avoid your body stiffening up in a plane seat! Here are few tips to have the smoothest journey and not arrived to destination completely shattered!
/Noise cancelling headphones: The best way to forget about your cramped seat and smelly neighbor is to sleep! I invested in a good quality of Sennheiser head phones few years ago and I am not going anywhere without it.
/A scarf or pashmina: Basically something to protect you from the mad air conditioning in the cabin. Really practical to cover your face when you want to sleep and can even serve as blanket. I bought a cashmere scarf on sale at Kookai few years ago and I haven't done a travel without since!
/Water: You know, the hydration thing that everybody keeps talking about, that's true and it's much easier to have a bottle in your bag than waiting hours before the flight attendant got time to pour you half a glass. Avoid alcohol at all cost, it will only make you feel worse when you land. Be aware that you need to purchase the water after you have passed the airport security checks otherwise it will end up in a bin! Only bottles under 100 ml are allowed.
/ Face cream/ Oil: Lather yourself in your favorite body cream before your trip and bring a small tube to reapply it especially on your hands on feet. This applies even more if you suffer from psoriasis and eczema. Aircon will make your skin dry up and crack. Any kind of good quality rich cream will do. The pocket size hand cream from L'occitane are practical and smell smells like heaven. I use Kora rosehip oil as well on my skin, it will be a bit shiny but it works wonders to keep your skin soft and smooth. I have also tried one of their new face balm wich is my new travel companion, easy to reapply and no mess in your handbag, check it out!
/Stretch: I always plan my flight for a departure in the evening and try to fit a yoga or pilates sessions in the morning to get my muscles moving. I used to love window seat but I know almost prefer the aisle seat as I can get out of the row easily, go for a little walk to the bathroom and strech. We are NOT talking about going full on downwards dog in the galley but more discreet stretches that will avoid your muscle to seize up. I also carry a small massage ball with me to roll under my feet.
/Eye mask and a super comfy pillow: A good travel pillow worth investing in. The one provided on most airline is not great, so if you love to sleep in the plane take one with you. I am also planning on investing in a proper eye mask that doesn't disturb your eye movement. When I am in pain, travel with a neck brace to relieve my neck muscles.
/ Heat patch/Voltarene: Those kind of patches can last up to 8 hours and help relieve aches and pains.
/Food: Airplane food is far to be healthy so don't hesitate to take your own food with you, it is totally allowed and will help with that bloated feeling once you have arrived. Don't forget to throw the leftover before the security when you arrive at destination.
/Spare clothes: I always take a pair of comfy clothes with me and get change in the plane and change back before I land. Socks: I rarely use the socks that are provide in the plane. I always bring my own pair of Icebreaker woollen socks to keep my joints warm.
/Medication: Last but not least, take more than enough medications for your trip. Do not forget your prescriptions to be allowed to have your medications with you in the cabin . Take the details of your doctor with you in case you need to contact him for a refill.
